Mavis began running at age 37. She got quite a late start, but once she started she never stopped. Mavis had multiple health issues growing up, but once she started running she started feeling better and her health improved. Running helped break her heath barriers. Mavis began her career with race walking. Once she got tired of race walking, she decided to start running. Before every race, even now, Mavis is nervous to run, but when she starts running all of her fears just disappear. In her first race she failed. Mavis took close to last place. This gave her the confidence to try harder and never give up.

Soon Mavis started running really well and some people said she was “addicted.” Mavis loved running because of the way she felt. She trained at an average of 6 hours per day and even started training with Olympic athletes. She then began to gain a lot of firsts in running. Most of these involving being the first woman to complete a race. Even though most of the races she was the only woman, Mavis didn’t let that discourage her. Mavis put her heart and soul into every race because running was the thing she loved doing.
